France's Michel Hazanavicius on Sunday took home the Oscar for best director for silent movie The Artist, at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony. The 44-year-old, who triumphed over veterans including Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen, had already won a series of gongs for his black-and-white homage to the silent movie era. Meryl Streep wins Best Actress for her role as Margaret Thatcher in Iron Lady. The Award is presented by Colin Firth, who won Best Actor for The King's Speech in 2011. This is her third Oscar after Kramer vs Kramer (1979) and Sophie's Choice (1982) and her 17th nomination. Jean Dujardin wins Best Actor for his role as silent film star George Valentin in The Artist.
